Flash Systems Supplement Wiki

Flash. It's confusing. There's a ton of different buzzwords and acronyms. Adobe's saying it's an open platform, with SWF, RTMP, FLV, AMF, specifications available. Everything's open.

It's also not the best specs and documentation available. We know, we've tried to work with it, and it's confusing. That's why we're trying to do what Adobe didn't.

We're guessing a Wiki is the best way to do this, although we're not sure. We still might need a way for you to ask questions and get feedback.

Anyway, here are the current topics we find crucial to Flash development, along with their specifications if they exist.

• SWF – Official SWF Specification
• SWC – Zip file used for linking at compile-time, no known specification.
• Standard Library – Runtime reference
• Pixel Bender – Developer information, includes a language reference
• FLV – FLV container format, open-specification, closed codecs
• AMF – Binary marshalling format used for interchange between Flash and a server, spec
• RTMP – spec

And now for AVM2:

• Tamarin – The official implementation of AVM2
• abc – The bytecode format of Tamarin. Old specification
• asc – Compiler for AS3, written in Java, part of the Flex SDK
• esc – Compiler for ECMAScript 4, self-hosted in ECMAScript 4, part of the Tamarin project
